The Town

Where You'll Be

Kagadi is the commercial centre of Kagadi District, in the Bunyoro sub-region of western Uganda, about 1,180 metres above sea level. It's a fast-growing town of around 31,000 people, with a central market, banks, Kagadi General Hospital and African Rural University.

The roads are the reason so many people pass through. Tarmac runs east to Mubende, north-east to Hoima, and south to Kyenjojo and Fort Portal.

Culture

What's Your Empaako?

Spend time in Bunyoro and someone may ask for your empaako. It's a praise name, one of a small set shared across Bunyoro and Tooro, and people use it to greet each other with respect and warmth. UNESCO lists the tradition as intangible cultural heritage.

We think about that when we say comfort is our culture. Greeting people properly is where it starts.
